The Kratom Dosage Tutorial
Found throughout Southeast Asia – particularly in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Bali, and Borneo – kratom is a close cousin to the coffee plant, though the impact that it has on the body after it has been consumed is quite a bit different.
Beloved throughout Southeast Asia for its medicinal properties, kratom has been used for centuries in this part of the world as an all-natural medicine and painkiller. The leaves of the many different kratom plant strains possess almost opiate-like painkilling capabilities – and some have even compared it to cocaine in the way that it works on the body.
Consumption in lower-level kratom dosages can lead to highly energizing stimulant benefits, whereas consuming it in higher-level kratom dosages can start to see major pain relief and sedative effects start to take over.
It’s important to understand that kratom is not technically classified as an opiate, though it does have a biochemical impact that affects the exact same receptors in the body as opiates and opioids will.
To better understand everything that kratom brings to the table (and to figure out the best kratom dosage for your specific needs and goals) we have put together this quick guide.
Let’s dig a little deeper, shall we?
What is Kratom, Exactly?
As we alluded to a moment ago, kratom has been used throughout Southeast Asia for hundreds and hundreds of years as an all-natural and alternative medicine.
While the original history of kratom usage by humans throughout this region gets a little fuzzy the further back in time you go, the general consensus is that the people of Thailand were the first to start using kratom for its medicinal and therapeutic purposes while at the same time using it for recreational and religious purposes as well.
It didn’t take long for the people of Malaysia to start embracing everything that kratom had to offer, either.
Today, both those throughout Northern Malaysia and Southern Thailand – particularly in the trades – use kratom leaves the same way that people use coffee beans. They use it as a stimulant that is either chewed raw, smoke it the way you might other herbs and plants, or turn it into a lightweight tea that offers many of the same benefits you to expect a traditional cup of coffee to bring to the table.
Across the rest of Thailand kratom is still used in a lot of religious ceremonies but it is mainly used as an alternative (an all-natural alternative, at that) to traditional painkillers. The analgesic properties of kratom are remarkable, with some in Thailand using it to not only treat acute and chronic pain issues but also using it to break free of addictions like opioids and morphine dependents.
In the past, illicit drugs like opium and heroin had become quite scarce throughout the region – and that’s when kratom really started to be used recreationally in large quantities. It continues to be used as a recreational drug today throughout the region, though laws and regulations strictly prohibit this kind of activity.
It wouldn’t be until 1831 that the Western world first started to become aware of everything that kratom had to offer. It was around this point in time that a Dutch botanist working with the Dutch East India Trade Company was shown the plant by people of Thailand and Malaysia and initial testing and research on kratom began by the Europeans.
In 1895, English surgeons were taking advantage of kratom as a painkilling medicine and a big part of their procedures – verifying the conclusions that the Dutch had come to a little more than 60 years prior.
Today modern researchers know that kratom (when consumed in a high enough dosage, of course) really does provide a whole host of health and pain relief benefits. All of these benefits are made possible by powerful phytochemicals found throughout this plan, phytochemicals that create a cascade of biochemical reactions throughout the body all while targeting specific opioid receptors in humans.
At lower-level kratom dosages, the specific alkaloids in different kratom strains bind directly to Kappa opioid receptors and other neurotransmitters throughout the body. These are the opioid receptors and neurotransmitters most responsible for producing the stimulant impact that kratom provides, with MU receptors and neurotransmitters being activated at higher kratom dosages to produce the more analgesic impacts this plant offers, too.
How Do You Take Kratom?
We will dig into specific kratom dosage information in just a moment, but it’s important to realize that the individual kratom dosage you are recommended to take will be influenced by a variety of different factors – not the least of which is how you plan on consuming or using kratom in the first place.
The most common way to take advantage of kratom (commercially available kratom, anyway) is through pills that consist of kratom extract or kratom powder. These capsules are very easy to transport, very inexpensive, and very consistent in their kratom dosage.
On top of that, most of these capsules are also designed to be highly bioavailable which means you get to enjoy the kratom benefits you’re looking for much faster than you might have with other approaches.
Kratom powder is available as well (oftentimes sold in bulk quantities), with kratom extract, kratom tincture, kratom vape juice, and kratom supplements just a couple of the other commercially available forms you can buy this all-natural medicine in today.
Kratom can also be taken topically in oils and lotions, applied liberally directly to areas of the body that are causing you pain or are aching with nearly instant pain relief possible in these targeted areas with this approach.
You certainly won’t want for choices or options when it comes to making the most of kratom delivery mechanisms, that’s for sure.
Important Kratom Dosage Information
Individual kratom dosage details will also be influenced by your age, your overall health and wellness, and a variety of other conditions that can impact how this all-natural plant and herb interacts with your unique biochemistry.
The average dosage recommendation for those that are going to be consuming kratom is about 1 g to 5 g each day if you are consuming it orally (regardless of the delivery mechanism you select). It’s always a good idea to stick with a lower dosage to begin with just to sort of feel out how your body responds, ramping things up later down the line to enjoy more sedative and pain relief benefits – or keeping things “light” for the stimulant benefits that kratom provides at lower dosages.
While you will not see any real significant side effects or health risks in the short or long-term (something we cover in just a second a little more in-depth) it is possible to deal with discomfort, pain, and digestive issues if you “overdose” with kratom in a short amount of time.
Again, it’s best to stick to smaller kratom dosages when you are just getting started with this all-natural compound rather than jumping into the deep end with higher dosages that can lead to some sticky situations.
Kratom Safety and Side Effect Details
At higher kratom dosages, you are most likely going to deal with at least some stomach discomfort, stomach pain, and cramps that can really get intense – particularly if you are already dehydrated.
Ramp up those dosages even more so and it’s likely that you’ll have to contend with nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and a host of other issues over a 24 hour span of time until all of that excess kratom has been passed out of your body and out of your system in the form of liquid or solid waste.
It’s very unlikely that you’ll deal with any short or long-term side effects that could risk your health or wellness when using kratom at any dosage, however. You certainly won’t have to worry about the kinds of side effects that are associated with traditional opioids or even over-the-counter painkillers, for that matter.
Better Understanding the Legality of Kratom
The overall legality of kratom is in a little bit of a gray area here in the United States as well as throughout the rest of the world.
As we highlighted above, there are a number of nations and municipalities throughout Southeast Asia that have banned kratom for recreational purposes – if not banned it outright entirely.
In the United States, kratom is not illegal to purchase or to consume at the federal level. There are some states in the US that do not allow their citizens to purchase kratom, states that have criminalized the use or possession of kratom. Six states in specific – Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin – have made it illegal to use, to possess, or to purchase kratom entirely.
Throughout the rest of the country, however, you won’t run into these kinds of legal hurdles at the state level but may run into issues at the local and municipal levels. It’s always a good idea to double-check the rules and regulations in your state and your community to figure out if you are cleared to get your hands on kratom and take advantage of everything that it brings to the table.
